UHLERSTOWN COVERED BRIDGE - UHLERSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA

BUILT - 1856*

Length - 101'... In Uhlerstown, Tinicum Township. PA32 S. 200' from Bridge St. (bridge to New Jersey), W. on Uhlerstown Hill Rd. 0.3 miles to the bridge. Less than a mile west of Frenchtown, N.J. Built by Mahon C. Lear at a cost of $2236.75. (Research shows there was a bridge previously on this site although evidently it needed replaced for some reason) The bridge was named after Michael Uhler a local resident who was a canal builder, the village postmaster, and was also the owner of the majority of businesses in the near area. The purpose of the bridge construction was to cross the Delaware Canal by Lock #18. Bridge was rehabilitated in 1985. The Delaware Canal was first opened in 1832 and although it reached its peak shipping in 1855, the canals stayed in operation until the early 1930s. According to the National Park Service, it was the longest-lived canal in the country. Bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Bridge is open for through traffic. Length - 190' ... SSE of Lenhartsville, Greenwigh/Windsor Townships. PA143 S. 1.7 miles from jct with Penn St. in Lenhartsville, E. on Covered Bridge Rd. Bridge sits at intersection. Bridge rehabilitated in 1968. Posted to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1981. Open to through traffic. Truss Type - Covered Double Burr Arch Through Truss.

PLEASANTVILLE/OLEY TURNPIKE COVERED BRIDGE - OLEY, PENNSYLVANIA

BUILT - 1852-1856

Length - 142' ... ESE of Oley, Oley Township. PA73 E. 3.4 miles from jct with Friedensburg Rd. in Oley, S. on Covered Bridge Rd. 0.5 miles to the bridge. David Renno built the bridge in 1852 on stone abutments constructed by Levi Marks. In its original configuration, the structure consisted of a multiple- king-post pony truss with two sets of arches. In 1856, the county commissioners contracted with Jonathan Bitner to enclose the bridge. Bitner added a third set of arches in the building process. Throughout much of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, the road which the bridge sits upon, was known as the Oley Turnpike, a privately financed toll road. The toll house, which functioned until 1927. Posted to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1981. Open to through traffic. Truss Type - A unique adaptation of a Covered Theodore Burr's Through Truss patented truss form.
