CUMBERLAND/MATTHEWS COVERED BRIDGE - MATTHEWS, INDIANA

Length - 181'.... Located in Matthews on 3rd Street (CR 990E) leaving the village. Was originally called the New Cumberland Bridge. The bridge was built by William Parks of Marion, Indiana. The bridge was floated .5 miles downstream during the 1913 flood. It was returned upstream on rollers dragged by horses. The foundations were raised an additional 3 feet at that time. The 1958 flood only loosened a few boards. Posted to the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1978. Rehabilitated in 1999. Bridge is still open for through traffic.
