THOMPSON MILL COVERED BRIDGE - COWDEN, ILLINOIS

BUILT - 1868

Length - 110' (There are many internet sites incorrectly listing it as 160') .... ENE of Cowden, Dry Point Township. Locust St. E. 2.3 miles from jct with IL128 in Cowden, N. on 1725E (becomes 1740E) 0.9 miles, W. (curves N.) on 1790E 0.1 miles to the bridge on the W. side of the road. Cost $2,500 to build.  The bridge was named after the first mill owner near this location. The bridge was built in Michigan, shipped to Shelbyville, and hauled to the river crossing by horse-drawn wagons. The bridge provided are residents access to the Thompson Mill, a corn mill and saw mill which operated from 1843-1914. Posted to the National Register of Historic places on March 13, 1975. Closed to motor traffic. Truss Type - Covered Howe Through Truss.
